The Outline View in MEISE has three different functions. First, it facilitates navigation in large MEI documents providing an overview of the document’s tree-structure. Second, like the Properties View it is essential for editing a document because via drag and drop, you can build your hierarchically MEI tree in this area, whose graphical results are shown in the Musical Score View. And last, it offers a quick switch between the sources in the MEI document (if such exist). More detailed information is given in the “Using the MEI Score Editor“ part . Every time you select an element (Measure, Note, Rest, Beam, Tie, Slur) in the Outline View via left-click the respective element in the Score View gets highlighted in blue colour, so that the user always knows at which point within the document he is at the moment.
